Cell phone charges

I know hindsight is 20/20 but for whatever reason this was a very expensive lesson for me to learn. It wont happen again. Like I said I still owe approx 400.00 on this bill and it is not a high priority for me. You are absolutly right- you get nowhere with the company- to the point of them chuckling at my aggravation.

I have to pull in the golden rule here. What goes around comes around. Sam Walton became no. 1 because of how he treated his customers and you sure cant go wrong cutting some slack and treating your customers in a respectful way.

Cingular may prosper for a while but I sure wouldnt want that company in my stock portfolio.

You would be amazed at how many people I have run into who were soundly clipped by Cingular.

Personally I would rather talk thru a tin can hooked to a piece of string.

Enough of my diatribe. I have learned my lesson and by God’s grace I wont have to repeat it.

Love this blog with all you kindred spirits.

I was a Cingular subscriber for over 10 years

I was a Cingular subscriber for over 10 years. Started with them when they were a small start-up called Cellular One. I subscribed to a family plan with 4 phones and was told that calls made between the family plan phones (as well as any other Cingular phone for that matter) were $0.00 per minute. In actuality, my minutes were charged twice, once for making the call and once for receiving the call. And the family plan minutes were also used up twice as fast, minute for minute on both phones on the call. Continued calls to Cingular fell on deaf ears.

They were not the least bit concerned that a loyal charter subscriber threatened to go to the competition if not satisfactorily resolved. I asked why someone would get a Cingular family plan when you couldn’t call between phones on the plan at no charge and was told it allowed me to share minutes between the phones. How is that a deal when I needed twice as many minutes? When I did transfer my phone numbers to another cellular provider I was charged a pro-rated fee for EACH line even though the wording of the contract inferred the termination fee was on the contract not on the number of phones. Final bill = $640.00. I even had to apply for installment loan at MtpLoans (I was approved despite my bad credit!) to get money to pay that bill.

Bottom line recommendation: DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO CINGULAR WIRELESS. Their customer service is virtually non-existent (youngsters in TX with no concept of where NY is or the particulars of any given plan since Cingular changes its plan components more often than I change my socks) and they seem to have no concern for customer satisfaction.

I have been very pleased with Verizon Wireless and the coverage is better.

Large companies in general are pretty rough with their customers

I have noticed that large companies in general are pretty rough with their customers these days. I had a new, single business line (land, not wireless) installed by Verizon and have had nothing but issues with their installation, setup, service and billing. I have had to waste hours of my personal time to get it all straightened out only to find that they slammed me for long distance. Even getting that worked out was a really big hassle.

As far as the wireless problem you described. Even if you were making payments, if you officially cancelled the lines under contract, they probably have the “legal” right in their contract to charge you an early termination fee. Sometimes it’s cheaper to reduce your plan to the minimum monthly plan and pay it out than to terminate and pay the fee. Go prepaid next time.

I hope it works out for you. They have an army of attorneys, so if you fight them, go to small claims court where you can defend yourself.

Exorbitant cell phone fees

Dear blog,

We had a family plan with Cigular horizon- 4 phones total. we were never behind on the monthly bills. However my 2 teenage daughters went too crazy with text messaging, etc. Our monthly payment was 180.00. Finally i said enough. Cancelled all the phones and continued the payments. Cingular slapped a 150.00 per phone early disconnection notice on us!! I am outraged and I continued with the on time payments and they put the account in collection!

I wrote to the VP at Cingular stating unfair and spurious penalties.

No response. My balance on the account is approx 390.00- making a 60.00 per mo payment.

I want to challenge this bill- even to the point of court. Anyone with a similar story?

If anyone out there is even thinking of Cingular wireless please take a second hard look at this company.

FICO – what do I need to get approved for a line raise?

I have a Barclaycard card that recently offered me a 5% balance transfer deal. I had a $0 balance on the Barclaycard card, and a $1500 limit.

I transferred $750 into it from a card that was charging 21%. I didn’t want to max it out, because I know that can hurt your rating (ratio of balance vs. total credit line). Plus the 21% card is a closed account, so my available credit on that account doesn’t mean anything toward my ratio. (?)

Anyways, my question is, if I have a FICO score of 640, is that high enough to call Barclaycard and request a line increase? If I can get my credit line up to say, $2500, I could then transfer another $1000 or so from another high interest card and still have some padding left over to make it a good ratio.

What I DON’T want to do, is request a line increase and get shot down, because I know those inquiries hurt your FICO. But I’ll risk it if there’s a good chance I can get approved for the increase.

So who out there can give me some advice on this? Should I wait a few more months until it’s over 670?

P.S. Barclaycard cardholders have access to their FICO score for free and is updated monthly. I strongly recommend anyone who is concerned about their score to try to get an account with them, instead of paying to see your score.

I’d pick door #2

I personally feel leave your savings account alone for unscheduled events (need I say “Rita”). The advantage is this method improves your credit score since savings accounts don’t factor in on ones score.

Getting a loan means you’re reshuffling your debt, so one would need to have discipline to not start new card debt while the credit union loan is being paid. I just wish Greenspan would quit raising the interest rates because practically every month’s card statement my rate jumps .25%. Very discouraging.

My dad’s is in the garage

Is it just the heat that is an issue or something else? We don’t use the garage for the cars, so it never gets very warm. We’re pretty shaded by trees. We used to keep the big one in the laundry room, but after it died (35 years old), my dad bought one that was too big to fit down the stairway. So, he just put in the garage.

There was never enough space for me to have much stuff since they buy turkies, hams, etc when they are on sale, and can fill it pretty easily. So, I got a medium one for me. I stuffed it full in the two months before the expected strike, so I was prepared to eat well without an income. And now, I just replenish when I need to. It is really nice to buy the stuff I know I will use, when it is on sale, and then it is handy when I am ready to eat it.

Reminds me, I need to get something thawing for dinner tonight. Letfovers will be frozen for work lunches. I even got the chinese cook at work to teach me how to make my favorite, broccoli beef. I used to buy it almost every day on my break ($3 for a tiny box). Now I can make it, and have a larger serving for less. I do up a huge double batch, and I can get 2 dinners for me, 2 dinners for my nephew (walking garbage disposal), and about 6 lunches for work. That works out to $2 a serving, and the dinner servings are twice the lunch servings, at least. And sometimes, I can get it cheaper with sales.

I saw your response and thought

I saw your response and thought you were just talking about your particular credit card but to my horror heard on the radio today that ALL credit cards are going to double the minimum payments. They say in the long run that it will help people pay down their debt quicker and make them think twice about their spending but in the meantime it’s going to be an extreme hardship on those who can only afford to pay the minimum.

Having said that, does anyone have any advice on either one of the following scenario’s:

1) deplete my savings accounts and pay off the credit card debt then focus on building it up again

2) get a consolidation loan from my credit union; pay off the credit cards and pay the loan off ASAP. (I was thinking that the loan would have a smaller minimum payment then the card).

While it’s true that bankruptcy is an option

While it’s true that bankruptcy is an option. it does not fix the underlying problem of spending control. If you’re in the habit of spending more than you have, that habit needs to change or you’ll find yourself in the same position later with few to no options because of your bankruptcy. It does “hang around” for at least 7-10 years.

I wish that homestead did, but it doesn’t. Homesteading just helps out on your taxes and such. Everyone has given me alot to think about. My cousin did a plan that a finanical guy on the radio talked about. You keep your budgeted money in envelopes. One for food, gas, medical, gas, and such. I think I will try that, after I see what we spend money on. Wish me luck all and THANKS SOOO MUCH for all the advice.

My cousin is a lender and he has given loans to people out of bankruptcy less than 3 months. He said they prefer a bankruptcy over a low Fico score for a few reasons. One of them being, they realize you can’t file again any time soon. And many times people have long work historys which are very beneficial.

There are many people who were able to reestablish credit right away. But, I agree if you don’t get control of the symptom it will happen again..thinking about a friend who is now out of her 10th yr of a previous bankruptcy and ready to file again…WOW…

I have all kinds of legal links

Yes, I have all kinds of legal links and have done a bunch of research on this matter. 42USC666 is now having and will continue to have an astounding affect on our society.

There are many things folks can do to defend against the illegal acts of CSE in each state. You have to stay away from suing the Feds, and there is simply not much law that lets you sue the feds except for the Rehab Act of 1973 Sec. 504 for disabled folks. There are many tools to deal with state governments which have been published by the feds.

Many of these tools are hidden in the very CS laws the Feds wrote themselves. If y’all want to learn a little, I will do what I can.

You can file your own contempt petition

Yes, you can file your own contempt petition. Child support and visitation are two different legal issues. Even if my X stops paying child support, and I withhold visitation because of same, I can be jailed.

The Petition is easy to write, if you want one you need to give me some specifics, or I could send you a sort of fill in the blank type thing. Additionally, you need to have paid by certified check, by certified mail, your arrears before the date you file the Contempt Petition.

Then her shit can be dismissed and the meat grinder turns its attention to her for being a bitch. I have done this before and it really works. I have got to teach you guys some writing stuff. And, after awhile it is fun.

Ok heres the scenario

I recently moved to southern Ca To be near my kids because my ex is alienating them from me. I have a new wife and a new baby since the last court order. To make a long story short I went didn’t pay child support for 2 months while I was moving down here And now not only is ex taking me to court for it but DA is takin me too for the same monies I owe ex.

I have an attorney down here but im not sure he has my best interests at heart. He says I have no legal leg to stand on and I cant file to get my support changed till after I go to Court for the arearages because i am in contempt.

but isnt she in contempt when she doesnt let me have my scheduled time with my kids? Cant I taker her to court at the same time for that? he doesn’t seem to want to follow up on the contempt charges on her at all. Even though we can prove them. I have phone records and documentation proving I went to here school to pick the girls up for my time and they were not there.

I have found the email negotiations

I have found the email negotiations in my case to be very unproductive. But they are also the only way besides a mediator that I can get a word in. And she refuses of course to use a mediator unless I foot the bill. She says she cant afford it. It also is stated in our agreement that she is to pay half the cost of a mediator. The woman makes over 100,000 a year with her new husband not counting the 24,000 I give her and she cant afford to pay 40 bucks for a mediator! She would rather just not let me have the kids for my scheduled time.

I must say though sometimes it makes me feel good to let her have it over an email that I know shes going to mull over for a few days!

She hates it when I question her mothering skill : )

Then again she shouldn’t email me in the first place if she really didnt want a response. She also makes a habit of sending all her emails to me and my current wife who blasts her big time over it.

Credit and marriage?

I am engaged with improving credit (should be pretty good by next year) but my fiance has a LOT of credit issues from a foreclosure in a previous marriage to numerous medically related bills. We are not looking to purchase a home for the next 3 years due to educational goals but that time will come so I am attempting to be proactive. Can anyone make suggestions as how we may be able to get married without her credit history uniting with mine?

I’m not sure if this is possible so I ask. Our best scenario is probably to get a house using my credit when the time comes since she has at least one long-term credit hit (foreclosure) so any advice is welcomed.

I’ve read the following somewhere – is that true?

My wife and I had a similar situation. I had previously filed a Chapter 7 and it was still lurking around on my credit when it came time to buy a house. I made significantly more money than she did so affording the payments was no problem. Our mortgage broker suggested that we do the loan in her name only because with my name on the loan the interest rate would have been 2 points higher.
